Registering Your Company and Vehicle

There are several registration processes to complete prior to operating a commercial vehicle.

Charter Buses:
Effective January 1st, 2016 charter buses that travel interstate are required to obtain IRP registration.

How does this change impact my company?
Beginning on January 1, 2016, In order to operate a charter bus interstate, a company will need to register their buses with IRP registration and IRP license plates.

How can I register my buses with IRP registration and license plates?

Visit our Georgia Trucking Portal at and click on the “IRP Request USER ID and PASSWORD”, hyperlink, click on the “New IRP Customer” option in order to receive detailed instructions on documents to submit to the Commercial Registrations Unit email at Once the Commercial Registrations Unit has processed your request, we will email to you a unique User ID and Password in which to access the IRP online registration system and complete transactions for your fleet

RP applications and manuals can be found when selecting the “Documents” tab on the Georgia Trucking Portal homepage and we strongly advise carriers that are not familiar with the International Registration Plan to review the “FAQs” content listed on the Georgia Trucking Portal as well.

How long does it take to receive IRP registration and license plates?
It will take approximately 10 – 14 business days to process your new IRP account and for you to receive your IRP registrations and license plates through the mail.

How much does an IRP registration cost?
IRP registration fees are based upon many factors including the carrier operation type, vehicle type and size and number of vehicles in the IRP fleet. Therefore, a registration bill is not available until after the account and all of the vehicle information is entered into the IRP system. Commercial Registrations Unit will send IRP invoice to you by email indicating the amount due to complete your transaction and issue your IRP registration and license plates.

What type of insurance does IRP accept?
Fleet Insurance Cards, Certificates of Insurance, and Insurance Binders. Insurance policy must cover vehicle(s) or fleet throughout registration period effective and expiration dates.

What forms of payments are acceptable?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, & American Express credit cards.

How do I make a payment?
You must have access to the IRP online registration system in order to make payments online:

1. To Request Access, click on the IRP-Registrations Instructions hyperlink, select if you are a New IRP Customer, Existing IRP Customer, Or Service Provider, submit required information to

If you already have access to IRP online registration system, Go to IRP, In Progress, click; “Proceed”, enter information identifying invoice to be paid including IRP Account Number or Invoice Number, continue with payment. (Pop-up blockers must be disabled in order to complete payment process.)

How and when do I renew my plate(s) and cab card(s)?
The staggered registration process requires that renewal applications for tags under the International Registration Plan must be submitted to the Department of Revenue, IRP office, sixty days before the expiration date listed on Cab Card. A late filing penalty of 10% is assessed if the renewal application is received late. If payment for the renewal application is received late, a late payment penalty of 25% of the Georgia fees will also be assessed.

When should I register my Charter Buses with IRP registration and license plates?
Charter bus companies can join IRP anytime between now and January 1st, 2016. Please see “Staggered Renewal Periods” listed under “Documents-IRP” in order to review when annual renewal filing periods are, based on business or individual name. We encourage companies to register as soon as possible in order for mailed IRP credentials and license plates to be received prior to current plate expirations.
